How much does Preqin cost now that BlackRock owns it?
Preqin does not publish prices, and its pricing stays quote-based under BlackRock, which closed its $3.2 billion acquisition of Preqin in March 2025 (BlackRock; Dakota). For comparison, one alternative publishes $9,500 a year for up to 5 users.
What did BlackRock buy?
BlackRock bought a private-markets data business covering about 210,000 funds and used by more than 220,000 people, according to its announcement when the deal closed in March 2025 (BlackRock). The price was $3.2 billion.
What has changed for Preqin users since the deal?
The data is moving into BlackRock's own platforms. By July 2026, Preqin benchmarks had been folded into Aladdin, eFront and Aladdin Wealth, according to a 2026 guide written by a competing vendor (Dakota). Users of those BlackRock systems gain the data inside tools they already use; standalone users should check how their own access and terms will evolve.
What should a standalone Preqin user ask at renewal?
Ask 4 questions in writing before you sign:
- Will the modules you use today stay available as a standalone product for the full contract term?
- Will the price change if you do not use Aladdin or eFront?
- How much notice is required to cancel, and can the term be shorter?
- Can you export your saved lists and data if you leave?
Written answers matter because a quote-based contract leaves the terms to negotiation.
Which Preqin alternatives do small funds consider?
| Tool | Reported or published price | Best for | Main gap | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preqin | Quote-based | LP and fund performance data | Now part of BlackRock; standalone terms to confirm | Dakota |
| Dakota Marketplace | $9,500 a year for up to 5 users, published | Allocator and fund research | Built around the allocator universe; vendor-written source | Dakota |
| PitchBook | About $12,000 to $70,000 a year, quote-based | VC, PE and M&A data with fund benchmarks | Price; stale data on small companies | VC Beast |
| Tamarly Intelligence | Free for 7 days, then $399 a month on Level 3 | Sourced pages on funds, managers and their holdings | No fund performance benchmarks | Tamarly |
Prices above are reported by third parties, several of which sell competing tools. Check current terms with each vendor.
When should you keep Preqin?
Keep Preqin if your work depends on its fund performance benchmarks, LP commitments or fundraising data, or if your firm already runs Aladdin or eFront and gains the data there. Few tools match those benchmarks across private markets.
A different setup makes sense if you mainly need fund and manager profiles, holdings and the filings behind them.
Where does Tamarly Intelligence fit?
Tamarly Intelligence is Tamarly's research platform on companies, funds, countries and markets, built from official filings and open data. As of 17 October 2026 it holds pages on 2,888 funds, with holdings for 1,290 and country exposure for 2,696, and on 15,359 fund managers, built from SEC filings with every figure linked to its source. It does not provide fund performance benchmarks or LP commitment data, so it does not replace Preqin for that work.
