How do you find a company's revenue in SEC filings?
Open the latest 10-K on SEC EDGAR and read the income statement in Item 8, then the segment note. To pull revenue as data, use the SEC's free company facts API, which returns every XBRL fact a company has filed in one JSON file, with no key (SEC EDGAR APIs). Check more than one revenue tag.
Where is revenue in a 10-K?
On the first line of the consolidated statements of operations, in Item 8, Financial Statements and Supplementary Data. The label varies: revenue, net sales, total revenues or, for banks, interest and noninterest income. Item 7, MD&A, explains what drove the change, and the notes break revenue down by segment, product and geography. For quarters, read the same statement in the 10-Q. Our guide on how to read a 10-K quickly sets out the full reading order.
Step 1. Find the company's CIK
Search the company on SEC EDGAR. The company page shows its CIK, the permanent number the SEC uses for every filer. The SEC's APIs need it padded with zeros to 10 digits, so CIK 320193 becomes 0000320193.
Step 2. Pull the company facts
The company facts endpoint at data.sec.gov/api/xbrl/companyfacts/CIK##########.json returns all of a company's XBRL concepts in one call; the company concept endpoint returns a single concept, such as one revenue tag, for one company (SEC EDGAR APIs). Each fact carries the period, the value, the form it came from and the accession number, so you can open the source filing.
The APIs are free and need no key. The SEC limits automated access to 10 requests a second and asks you to declare a user agent with your name or company and a contact (SEC developer resources).
Step 3. Check the right revenue tags
Companies tag revenue under different concepts in the US GAAP taxonomy. Check at least these:
| Tag | When companies use it |
|---|---|
| RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax | Revenue under ASC 606, excluding sales and similar taxes collected from customers |
| RevenueFromContractWithCustomerIncludingAssessedTax | The same, including those taxes |
| Revenues | A broad total, used by some companies instead of the ASC 606 tags |
Both ASC 606 tags appear across 10-K, 10-Q, 20-F and 40-F filers on the SEC's own API, for example this company concept record. A blank result for one tag may only mean the company used another, or a custom tag. The SEC's aggregate APIs use only standard taxonomies such as us-gaap, ifrs-full and dei, so revenue tagged with a company-specific concept will not appear in them (SEC EDGAR APIs).
Step 4. Match periods and amendments
Each fact has a start and end date and a fiscal period. Annual figures come from 10-K facts covering about 12 months; quarterly facts can be 3-month or year-to-date figures, so do not add them up blindly. When a company restates, a later filing carries a new value for the same period. Keep the value from the most recent filing and note the change.
Step 5. Compare across companies with frames
The frames endpoint returns one concept for every filer for a calendar period, such as CY2025 for a year or CY2025Q4I for a point in time, using the fact last filed that best fits the period (SEC EDGAR APIs). It is the fastest free way to rank a sector by revenue. Run it for each revenue tag and merge the results. For bulk downloads, the SEC rebuilds a companyfacts.zip archive nightly (SEC EDGAR APIs), and its financial statement data sets cover filings since January 2009 (SEC).
What about private companies?
Private US companies file no 10-K, so they have no XBRL revenue on EDGAR. A Form D may show a revenue range, though many issuers decline to disclose it. For those companies, see how to estimate private company revenue.
Where does Tamarly Intelligence help?
Tamarly Intelligence is Tamarly's research platform on companies, funds, countries and markets, built from official filings and open data. It reads SEC EDGAR financial data and European ESEF filings across 19,910 company pages and links every figure to the filing it came from. When Tamarly does not cover a company it says so. Its Platform API offers personal keys on the main routes, with 1,200 calls an hour per account; docs are at /developers. It does not offer an Excel data feed.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SEC company facts API free?
Yes. The data.sec.gov APIs are free and need no API key (SEC EDGAR APIs). Automated users must stay under 10 requests a second and send a user agent that identifies them (SEC developer resources).
Why does the API show no revenue for a company I know reports it?
Most often because the company used a different tag from the one you queried, for example Revenues instead of RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax, or a custom tag. Query the company facts endpoint and search every concept with "Revenue" in its name.
Can I get revenue for non-US companies?
Foreign companies that file 20-F or 40-F with the SEC tag their statements too, often in the ifrs-full taxonomy. European listed companies publish ESEF annual reports in their home markets, which carry the same kind of tagged statements.
